A Nerd/Geek Cousin Comments

The Old Fool was pleased to receive a comment from Robert Martin who considers himself an abnormal Anabaptist and has a website open to other Mennonite nerds and geeks.  Robert’s great grandmother was a sister of my mother and his grandmother was my first cousin,  so we are distantly related.  He reported that he has accepted my challenge to observe Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 for a week, and passed on the challenge to fellow nerds and geeks on his website.  I invite the readers of the www.oldmennofool.com to visit Robert’s unique community.

As teacher of the Sunday School Class on How to Study the Bible I accepted for myself the challenge to observe the passage from Ecclesiastes.  You see, I have never closely studied that particular passage before so I’m experiencing the joy of discovery once again.

I am prepared to receive class member’s discoveries tomorrow morning, and to share with them my own discoveries.  I will not here preempt my report to the class except to say that I have found the author to be an old man who is frustrated and unhappy. I wonder if “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit” includes the author of Ecclesiastes? I will need to study I Peter 2:21 more closely.

Here is an Indiana note:   A few days ago encouraged by summer-like warmth we planted a garden. This evening Eldon is covering the tomatoes to protect them from a threatened Sunday-morning frost!

About Martin Lehman

I was born 92 years ago, the son of a Mennonite pastor and organic gardener in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At age 10 I was baptized as a member of the Marion Mennonite Church. I own the "Old Fool" moniker because I want to walk the Jesus Way even though the world and much of the church takes me as a fool for doing so. In my life I have moved from being a young conservative to an elderly radical. I tell that story in My Faith Journey posted on my website.

  1. Thanks for the plug, cousin. I’m looking forward to hearing your observations but I’m going to “ignore” them for the short term until I’ve finished my week. 🙂

Meanwhile, I’m going to put the same challenge to my Sunday School class this morning…let’s see what they come up with. 🙂
