Highlight: Papa’s Advice

Today The Old Fool read with concern a report about  Menno Media.  Menno Media is a one year old  organization that combines the MC USA’s former Mennonite Board of Publication and Mennonite Mission Network’s Mennonite Media. It is having unexpected budget problems. As a result it needs to release some staff and adjust their expectations.  The Old Fool hopes that Menno Media will use all means available to it to  influence the world for good.

But the report carried good news about a book Menno Media has published. The author is Jonathan Larson.  He has had wide international experience.  The Old Fool knows him as a wonderful story teller and friend.  Click here to go to a moving Q & A with Larson about his book.  It is a wonderful read.  Larson’s book is about a man who made friends with the Taliban.

This reminds The Old Fool of a story often told by Rhoda.  She would tell of advice her Papa gave her as he took her for her first day in a new school, and she was nervous.  Papa Krady paraphrased a proverb: “She who would have friends must show herself friendly.”  That was a life lesson for Rhoda.  The proverb is true because it is true.

The Old Fool is convinced that the behavior Jesus taught for individuals is effective when practiced for tribes and nations as well.  It is reported that Jesus was a friend of sinners and that he went about doing good. He taught that we should love our neighbor as we love God, even if our neighbor is our enemy. That is the way Jesus loved everyone.  It is the way the evil of war will be overcome.

About Martin Lehman

I was born 92 years ago, the son of a Mennonite pastor and organic gardener in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At age 10 I was baptized as a member of the Marion Mennonite Church. I own the "Old Fool" moniker because I want to walk the Jesus Way even though the world and much of the church takes me as a fool for doing so. In my life I have moved from being a young conservative to an elderly radical. I tell that story in My Faith Journey posted on my website.
